Renting a bike? What to wear for your Mountain Biking Rental in BC?
On Vancouver Island we are fortunate enough to be able to ride almost all year around while the rest of Canada is in a deep freeze. Being a temperate rain forest we do get a lot of rain in the shoulder seasons, while the summers are generally hot and dry with good riding weather. When planning for your mountain bike rental, layers are key. In the summer, shorts and a good wickable shirt are all that’s really needed. It is also a good idea to have a windbreaker that is water repellant for the cold mornings. In the fall, winter and spring the weather can vary drastically so it is always best to check the daily forecast before heading out.
Some essentials during inclement weather include a gortex rain jacket/rain pants, merino wool baselayers, waterproof gloves, and waterproof shoes or socks. Make sure to bring a pack along because it's easy to over dress and you will likely want to shed layers. A good rule of thumb is to wear just enough clothes that you're a little cold before starting your ride. That way when you start peddling you won’t overheat.
Riding the Local Bike Trails - Nanaimo, Parksville, and Cumberland
BC is an amazing place to mountain bike and Vancouver Island has an abundance of amazing single track. We have trails for everyone from beginner to advanced so you might want to plan multi-day rentals to explore the area. Pick up your mountain biking rental at our shop and head to the Hammerfest trail network near Parksville. This network has a majority of blue trails, with fast flowing single track. Some local favourites are Scooby-Doo, Locomotion and Jughead.
Nanaimo has a couple of excellent trail network. Check out the Dumont trail system with the machine built Fine China and Finer China. These downhill jump trails are fun for the whole family and have shuttle access.
Cumberland is a must ride for anyone visiting Vancouver Island. It has over 400km of trails. The big draw here is a purpose built climbing trail with a mellow grade to allow easy access to the top of the trail network. With some bigger epics like Furtherburger you can plan an all day ride.
There are numerous other amazing places to ride from MT Tzouhalem, Hornby Island, Quadra Island, and Port Alberni. We would be happy to recommend trails for your skill level and remember Trail Forks is your friend.
What is good Trail Etiquette? Enjoying your Mountain Biking Rental.
Being on the trails is a privilege not a right, so please treat all trail users with respect. Yield to non-motorized users and give equestrian riders and animals a wide berth. Up hill traffic has right of way, ride don't slide and leave the trails as you found them.
Enjoy the Ride!
A mountain biking rental is a great way to add adventure to you holiday and explore the local area. Our staff is always willing to give advice on trails and if you enjoy your adventure, please consider donating to the local trail networks as they are all volunteer based. As always pack plenty of food and water, pack out your garbage and have fun!
